In the Silence, We Remember

Each November, we pause.

For a moment, the world seems to hold its breath β€” flags hang still, footsteps quiet, and hearts turn toward reflection. Remembrance Day invites us to pause and reflect on the bravery, sacrifice, and humanity of those who have served in times of war and peace.

It is not only a day of solemn ceremony, but of gratitude. Gratitude for those who left home to protect what they believed in, and for the freedoms we inherit because of them. Whether we stand at a cenotaph, listen to the Last Post, or simply observe a two-minute silence, the act of remembering connects us β€” past to present, generation to generation.

The poppy, delicate yet resilient, has become our symbol of remembrance. Each red petal reminds us that peace is precious and must be protected. We wear it not out of obligation, but out of respect β€” for those who never came home, and for those who did, carrying memories we can never fully comprehend.

As time moves on and fewer veterans remain to share their stories, our promise to remember becomes even more important. Their courage lives on in our communities, in the values we uphold, and in the quiet moments we take to reflect on their legacy.

Here in Strathmore, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 10 continues to honour that legacy through its annual Remembrance Day ceremony. This year’s service will be held on November 11th, welcoming residents to come together in reflection and gratitude. The ceremony provides a chance for the community to pay tribute to local veterans and their families β€” a reminder that remembrance is not only national, but deeply personal and local.

This November, may we find stillness in the noise of daily life β€” to remember, to honour, and to give thanks. Because remembrance is more than looking back; it is a commitment to carry forward the lessons of courage, compassion, and peace.

May we carry their courage forward β€” in peace, in gratitude, and in remembrance.
